Kei trucks are tough little workers, but they're also simple, decades-old machines — and cold weather has a way of finding every tired part you've been ignoring. A little prep before the temperature drops means your Subaru Sambar, Honda Acty, Suzuki Carry, Daihatsu Hijet or Mitsubishi Minicab fires up on the first cold morning instead of leaving you stranded. Here's the pre-winter checklist.
1. Battery — the first thing cold kills
Cold weather saps battery power right when your engine needs the most cranking effort, and kei trucks run small batteries to begin with. Before winter, test your battery and charging system, clean the terminals, and replace a battery that's on its last legs. A weak battery that limped through summer often won't survive the first hard freeze.
2. Cooling system — antifreeze, thermostat & cap
This is the big one people forget. Your cooling system does double duty in winter:
- Coolant/antifreeze mix. Make sure you're running a proper antifreeze mixture so it won't freeze — frozen coolant can crack an engine. Top up and check the concentration.
- Thermostat. A thermostat stuck open means your engine never warms up — you'll get a truck that runs cold, heats poorly, and wastes fuel all winter. A cheap thermostat fixes it.
- Radiator cap & hoses. A weak cap or brittle hose is far more likely to let go in the cold.
3. Ignition — weak spark shows up worst on cold mornings
Marginal ignition parts that "kind of" work in summer will leave you cranking on a frosty morning. Fresh spark plugs, plug wires, and a clean distributor cap and rotor make cold starts dramatically easier. This is the single best upgrade for reliable winter starting on these older engines.
4. Oil & filters — fresh for the cold
Cold oil is thick oil, so start winter with a fresh oil change and clean filters. Old, dirty oil makes cold starts harder on the engine, and a clogged fuel or air filter only compounds a stubborn cold-start.
5. Belts — cold makes tired belts squeal
That morning belt squeal is a worn, glazed belt slipping on cold pulleys. Before winter, check your accessory belts for cracks and glazing — a fresh belt keeps the alternator charging (which your battery needs even more in the cold).
6. The little things
Round it out with the basics: top up washer fluid with a winter mix, check your wiper blades, and make sure your defroster and heater are actually working before you need them. Kei trucks are basic machines — a working heater core and a clear windshield go a long way on a cold morning.
