Here's the good news about owning a kei truck: these little Japanese workhorses are about as simple and cheap to maintain as any vehicle on the road. No turbo plumbing the size of an octopus, no $200 oil changes — just honest, straightforward mechanicals that reward a little basic care. Whether you're running a Subaru Sambar, Honda Acty, Suzuki Carry, Daihatsu Hijet, or Mitsubishi Minicab, the maintenance playbook is largely the same.
This is your plain-English tune-up checklist: the parts that actually keep a mini truck happy, why they matter, and roughly how often to touch them.
The "keep it running" basics
1. Oil & oil filter
The single most important thing you can do. These tiny engines spin fast and hold very little oil, so fresh oil and a clean filter matter more here than on a big truck, not less. Change it regularly and your engine will love you for it. We stock oil filters for every brand — grab one for your Sambar, Acty, Hijet, Carry, or Minicab.
2. Air filter
A clogged air filter chokes power and hurts fuel economy — and since many kei trucks lived a hard life in Japan before crossing the ocean, the one in yours is often overdue. It's a five-minute swap and an easy win. We carry OEM and aftermarket air filters for all five brands.
3. Fuel filter
Old fuel systems collect rust and grime, especially on trucks that sat before import. A fresh fuel filter keeps that gunk out of your carburetor or injectors and prevents rough running and hard starts. Cheap insurance.
4. Spark plugs & ignition
Fresh plugs (and good plug wires, cap and rotor where applicable) mean easy starts, smooth idle, and better mileage. If your kei truck cranks but stumbles or runs rough, the ignition system is the first place to look. We stock spark plugs, wires, distributor caps and rotors for the popular engines.
The belts — don't skip these
5. Timing belt (the big one)
This is the maintenance item people forget until it's too late. The Subaru EN07 engine in the Sambar uses a rubber timing belt with a roughly 100,000 km (about 62,000 mile) replacement interval — and because these trucks are decades old, plenty are running on original, cracking belts. If the timing belt lets go, it can mean serious engine damage. If you don't know when yours was last done, do it. 6. Accessory belts (alternator, A/C, power steering)
The belts that drive your alternator, A/C and power steering are wear items that dry out and squeal with age. They're inexpensive and easy to replace — and a snapped alternator belt on the highway is a bad day. Cooling & sealing
Thermostats and coolant keep these hard-working little engines from overheating — worth checking on any truck with unknown history. And gaskets (valve cover, head, exhaust) are common weak points on high-mileage kei engines; a small leak now is a big job later, so address seeping gaskets early.
